匿名ユーザーからの質問: I hope you find someone lovely who respects and loves you forever. You seem so troubled sometimes

This is so sad. Yeah I hope so too. I get the feeling that I am such a crazy burden sometimes that no-one will truly love me unconditionally and I ignore all the right people due to the pain the wrong ones have caused. I am currently ignoring the world and working hard to avoid all convos about anything or anyone. Forever blogging to keep my mind off things. Thank you so much though, My troubles aside my life is pretty wonderful, I have a lot to be grateful for. Enjoying the little things <3

SO.. I found my old art sketchbook dedicated to the horror genre today. It is safe to say I have an eye onto how to make innocent children, something of nightmares. I investigated into how you can create sinister presence in a character and I discovered that it was mostly in The Stare and the expression of the eyes that gave off the uneasy feeling.

This interests me because it shows how a simple facial expression and extended eye contact can make the audience feel uneasy and intimidated by the character, even if the stares come from children. It becomes apparent that the facial expressions can impact on the viewer’s emotions and leave them feeling scared. I like how a simple look in a person’s eye can completely change the way their personality or innocence instantly, for example the madness of Jack from The Shining (1980) and the sinister presence of the twins.

In cinema the directors create fear by using camera positioning including many extreme close ups of the face or low angle shots so the person looks more intimidating and sinister. I feel this is important when featuring child ‘monsters’ in horror films, for example Samara from The Ring(2001) has a gaze to show she is troubled. Her long black hair makes her more intimidating because it contrasts with her white gown; I also noticed that her hair is almost symmetrical, that is a trait used in most horror films to show unnaturalness. This symmetrical imagery is also used in Orphan (2009); Esther’s face was mirrored down the middle to make her look creepy and not humanized. This same reason is why twins are featured in many horror films like Stanley Kubrick’s, The Shining (1980).

A combination of symmetry and staring is heavily relied on in films of the horror genre; the eyes are usually the main focal point to make the characters look evil. Another key feature is lighting to create an unnerving aura to the characters with deep shadows on the face to connote evil or sinister personalities.

I could rant on all day about cinema, horror and art! Just wanted to post some images from my sketchbook as it seemed a same keeping them hidden away!

xoxo
